Essential Kitchen Tools for Mexican Cooking
Making Mexican food at home can be really challenging, especially if you don’t have the right tools for Mexican cooking. Many people think that if they have the right ingredients and mix the correct amount of spices, they could end up creating good Mexican food, but in reality, this is not how things work.
Mexican cooking combines both cultural culinary knowledge and unique cooking techniques to create tasty and healthy Mexican food. The cultural culinary heritage and various cooking techniques of Mexicans were developed through centuries of practice, and a wide variety of Mexican cooking tools are now used by many chefs to prepare Mexican food. Below are some of the Mexican cooking tools that can help you make your very own homemade Mexican meals and recipes.
- Comal – The Comal can allow you to cook tortillas and enjoy toast chilies. Comals are similar to steel skillets and flat irons, which are both effective in creating good tortillas and chilies. There are two types of Comal commonly used in Mexico, namely the clay Comal and the cast iron Comal.
Clay Comals are very fragile and don’t work well with modern high-temperature stoves. Because of this, cast iron Comals started to gain popularity in many Mexican communities.
Cast iron Comals are more durable to heat, and they don’t easily break. The only requirement with cast iron Comals is to regularly clean them, in order to ensure that they don’t rust.
- Tortilla Press – A tortilla press is used for creating perfectly flattened tortillas, which are used for making Mexican burritos and tacos. A tortilla press comes in different types, such as wooden tortilla presses, aluminum tortilla presses, and cast iron tortilla presses.
An aluminum tortilla press is the cheapest, and you rarely get a perfectly flattened tortilla from this tool. The wooden and cast iron tortilla presses are usually more reliable in creating thin and perfectly flattened tortillas. The only downside with these is they are more expensive than an aluminum tortilla press.
- Molcajete – A molcajete is Mexico’s version of the mortar and pestle made from lava stones. This kitchen tool is essential for making the best Mexican sauces, such as guacamole and salsa. Unlike modern food processors used for grinding, molcajete can give a better coarse finish that is suitable for making Mexican sauce.
- Chocolate Tool – A chocolate tool is usually made of long wooden materials. This Mexican kitchen tool has loose wooden rings for better whipping results, which are essential for creating good-tasting Mexican chocolate milk.
These Mexican cooking tools will definitely help you prepare the perfect Mexican food for your family. Understanding how to use each one of these kitchen tools will help you develop effective cooking techniques that can improve your Mexican recipes.
Repair cracked eggs. If you have an egg that cracks while boiling, just add a capful of vinegar to the water and watch as the eggshell seals itself. Unfortunately though, if the whites have begun to ooze out this trick won’t work.
